Who we are

SS. Peter and Paul Institute of Theology is owned by Benin, Ibadan and Lagos Ecclesiastical provinces of Nigeria. It was officially approved and established by the Dicastery for Culture and Education in accordance with the law and established norms. It enjoys the canonical rights of a juridical person.

The Institute is specifically offering theological studies in training of candidates to the Catholic priesthood, but remains open to the academic/theological formation and training of lay faithful only as determined by or with the approval of the moderator and the proprietors of the Institutes.

Vision

The vision of the Institute is to train priests whose relevance to contemporary society will be apparent through the service they render. To do this effectively, a serene environment is provided for the training and, students are encouraged to participate in extra-curricula activities in order to develop talents that will benefit them, their dioceses and the entire Church at large.

Mission

The Institute has for its specific purpose the academic theological formation and training of men who aspire to the Catholic priesthood in conformity with the principles of the evangelizing mission of the church. It aims at training young men in priestly virtues and in the acquisition of such knowledge as requisite for the salvation of souls and the advancement of the Kingdom of God.

Our History

Since the SS. Peter and Paul Institute of Theology is born from the Seminary of SS. Peter and Paul, Bodija, Ibadan, her history cannot be divorced from that of the Seminary. The emergence of our seminary. originally known as St. Martin's Seminary, Ivianokpodi (1908), later St. Martin's Seminary , Asaba (1927), then St. Paul’s Seminary. Benin City (1933) and now SS. Peter and Paul Seminary , Ibadan (1957), was the result of a 1965 directive of the Congregation for the Evangelization of People’s (Propaganda Fide), to the effect that all missionary congregations must encourage vocations among indigenous populations, as a testament of the success of their mission and the survival and continuous growth and development of the local churches.

BODIJA. IBADAN (SINCE 1957)
In the period immediately preceding Nigeria's political independence, Ibadan grew in importance. The establishment of the nation's premier university about the same time only served io further advance the rising profile of this ancient city. The relocation of the Seminary from Benin City to Ibadan, to. among other things, facilitate academic affiliation with the University of Ibadan. Thus in 1957, the seminary of St. Paul, Benin City, became SS. Peter and Paul major Seminary. Bodija. Ibadan. In 1973 the seminary completed the process of her affiliation to the Pontifical Urban University. Rome, for the award of the Bachelor Degree in Theology (Divinity).Bodija, ibadan now also now host the now established and erected SS. Peter and Paul Institute of Theology.

SS. PETER AND PAUL INSTITUTE OF THEOLOGY
Academic formation in SS. Peter and Paul Seminary is centered on Philosophy and Theology, administered, by two respectively departments. What used to be the Department of Theology is what is translated, by the approval of the Dicastery for Culture and Education, into SS. Peter and Paul Institute of Theology, in affiliation with the faculty of Theology of the Pontifical Urban University, Rome (FG. art 63 §1; Instr, art. 1 § !; 10 §1). Students of the Institute are candidates to the Catholic priesthood. In addition to academic formation, students are encouraged to acquire other human and cultural skills. Such extra­ curricula engagements provide avenues for students to develop and acquire skills that will benefit them, the Institute, and of course, their dioceses and apostolatcs.

SS. Peter and Paul Institute of Theology also has some publications, namely, the Voice Magazine, a Reflection Book (With Jesus on My Side), Bodija Journal and other Newsletters. These are some of die most effective means at the disposition of the Staff and students for the exchange and dissemination of ideas, which are indispensable for the edification and integral development of the individuals, the community and the larger Nigerian society.

AFFILIATIONS
A strong academic tradition is the hallmark of the Institute. Building on the foundations of previous affiliations to the University of Ibadan in 1968, when Seminarians were admitted into the Diploma course in Religious Studies, and later in 1985, when candidates with the requires academic qualifications were admitted to the bachelor of Arts (B.A) Degree programs in both philosophy and religious Studies, still with the University of Ibadan.The Institute is affiliated to the Faculty of Theology the Pontifical Urban University, Rome for the degree of bachelor of Theology (B.Th.). The Institute’s affiliation is a direct offshoot of the existing relationship of SS. Peter and Paul major Seminary , Bodija, Ibadan, which dates back to 1973.
